Education during and post-COVID: the role of technology and innovation

On the occasion of Italy's G20 Presidency, ICCS has decided to launch the events series Italy to G20.

ICCS in collaboration with Italian and ASEAN partners has selected a shortlist of specific topics related to the G20 working groups: Education, International Financial Architecture, Digital Economy, Trade and Investment, Tourism, Energy Transition and Climate Sustainability.

The topics will be discussed during a series of dialogues organized in Singapore where speakers, connected from ASEAN and European Countries, will share their views and experiences.

The first Webinar will be focusing on: EDUCATION

The Education Working Group at the G20 examines the factors affecting the right to education and access to higher education, also in light of the pandemic. Reducing the digital divide and exploring the digital tools to expand the communication channels between education and the job market will be among its priorities under the Italian Presidency.

The topics will be presented during the first webinar of the Italy to G20 series organized by ICCS in collaboration with Teach for All.

Edna Novak is the Head of Asia Pacific Region at Teach For All. Edna started her career as a teacher with Teach For America in the outskirts of New Orleans, Louisiana. Before joining Teach For All, Edna also worked on Teach For America’s staff, initially in recruitment and later as the executive director of the Connecticut region of Teach For America. In early 2012, Edna moved to New Zealand with Teach For All, initially as a consultant working closely with Teach For All network partners in New Zealand and Australia, and later in Malaysia and the Philippines, to support the CEOs in adapting Teach For All’s global approach to their local contexts. In 2014, Edna was promoted to lead the East Asia Pacific region of Teach For All, and in 2016, was promoted to her current role as Head of the Asia Pacific Region.
Edna and her team support a diverse and growing community of prospective and current Teach For All partner organizations across the Asia Pacific region to learn from each other and from the broader global network, accelerating their impact both locally and globally. Edna is based in Auckland, New Zealand, where she has lived since 2012. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Philosophy and Political Science from Wellesley College, and a Masters of Business Administration from Yale University.

Soon Seng is the CEO of Teach For Malaysia, an independent, not-for-profit organisation on a mission to ensure all children in Malaysia have the opportunity to attain an excellent education, so they can live lives they truly love. He joined the inaugural Teach For Malaysia Cohort in 2012, and like many other Fellows and Alumni, the experience had a profound impact on his worldview.
As a teacher in a low-income community, he was deeply moved by the challenges his students faced, and how it was the lack of opportunities, rather than the lack of ability, that typically prevented students from realising their potential.
He envisions a holistic education system that not only develops students' academics, but also their social, emotional, physical, spiritual, and leadership skills, in order to thrive in the 21st century. He holds a degree in Management and Marketing (Murdoch University) and a Post-Graduate Diploma in Education (Universiti Utara Malaysia).
In 2020 he was appointed a member of the Teacher Professionalism Special Taskforce under the National Education Advisory Council 2018-2020.

Andrea Pastorelli has 15 years of experience working with diverse organizations on issues related to human rights, public health, poverty, and inequality.
Andrea began his career working for the William J. Clinton Foundation, where he supported the development of its first HIV and health programs in Africa, and then joined the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in the Bureau for Development Policy in New York, where he designed and managed the Red Ribbon Award, an international initiative aimed at supporting grassroots organizations working on HIV and human rights around the world.

Andrea also worked in Dakar, Senegal, supporting the regional UNDP office in West Africa in its work on governance and coordination and in Beijing, China, where he oversaw UNDP’s Poverty, Equity, and Governance team. While in China, Andrea expanded the work of UNDP into new areas, including access to justice, gender, and LGBT rights as well as the development dimensions of smoking, creating a partnership with the World Health Organization.

Most recently, Andrea worked for the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Rome, managing regional programs focused on socio-economic integration of migrants in Europe, and supporting the Italian Ministry of Interior in developing and implementing the first National Integration Plan for Refugees. Andrea joined Teach For Italy in November 2018, seeing his return to Italy as an opportunity to put his skills and experience at the service of improving educational outcomes for Italy’s future generations.
